Generally, the minority communities in Bangladesh are lagging behind in all socio-economic development indicators. Research Initiatives Bangladesh (RIB) with the support of German Embassy initiated a project targeting the Santal and Oraon communities in Saltola, Birol, Dinajpur and Babupur, Sapahar, Naogaon to set an example on how to tackle the situation.
Under the project RIB has constructed one new building for residential/non-residential vocational training in Dinajpur and renovated another building in Naogaon. In the first year after construction of the buildings, 160 trainees (50% girls and women) received training on mechanical, electrical, mobile phone, wood craft, tailoring, handicraft, English language and Computer and ICT. Some exciting results have been achieved soon after the training completed: Many of the trained boys and girls got jobs related to their skills in local market places, some found self-employments and some have been absorbed in the upcoming training courses as training assistants, potentially to become trainers within their own community.
