Effective immediately, a new student visa application process will be introduced by the German Embassy in Dhaka.
What will happen?
The waiting list in the old appointment system will be closed effective immediately
A new waiting list will be opened in the Consular Service Portal at the same time.
The student visa process will be digitalized by using this Consular Services Portal for newly registering applicants.
What is going to change with the Consular Services Portal?
The student category in the Consular Services Portal is dynamic. That means that everyone who wants to newly apply has to fill out a questionary in advance. Depending on the answers, students will be sorted into different sections. For example, students with scholarships or PhD students will be automatically referred to the category “qualified students”.
All documents have to be uploaded before “handing in” the application online. Therefore, only applicants with a valid admission letter can register themselves in the Consular Services Portal.
VFS will handle the intake of all student visa applications that are processed via the Consular Services Portal.
What is going to happen with the registrations on the old waiting list?
The old wait list will not be deleted.
The old waiting list will be worked through before the Embassy starts processing the new registrations from the Consular Services Portal. Those already registered in the old list do not have to register in the new system.
For processing the old waiting list, the Embassy will use the same system as always. Bachelor Students: document submission mail by the Embassy;
Master students: appointment link mail for VFS sent out by the Embassy.
PhD students and students with German or European scholarships will immediately be processed after registration in the Consular Service Portales since they didn’t figure in the old waiting list.
It is technically not yet possible migrate the waiting list into the CSP.
Will the waiting time be reduced?
This is not to be expected. Student visa applications increased exponentially to more than 81.000 in the last years which stand against 1.700 processed student visa in 2024 by the Embassy whilst working at full capacity. The long and constantly increasing waiting time is a result of the sheer number of fully documented applicants. This number even remains huge and far beyond the capacities of the Embassy when a large number of applicants don’t show any longer interest in the visa when the Embassy requests them to submit their documents as it is currently the case. Applicants without full documentation or those who after a long time have found alternatives but still remain on the old list don’t delay the visa processing and don’t contribute to the long waiting times, they only make waiting times less previsible.
Should I inscribe myself in the Consular Services Portal now?
Yes, if you have a scholarship or you want to pursue a PhD.
If you are a master or bachelor student without German or European scholarship, you should be aware of the constantly increasing waiting time that stands already now at more than 27 months. You have to gauge if such a long and largely unpredictable waiting time makes sense for your individual study plans.
